Valentines Day: Don't Hate but Don't Love it too

Well, it's the time of the year again that I dreaded, its not that I am loveless or anything. Its just that I hate the connotation of this day being a "romantic day". Every one treats it with reverence especially here in the Philippines. Every one is buying flowers and giving it to their "sweetheart", chocolates abound (not that I don't like it but well I love chocolates so that why I like valentines day a lil bit I guess) and it seems like every one is out and about in the malls creating a big bulk of traffic and overflowing lines in counters. These are the things that makes me not want to spend valentines day at all! Of course, its not also a non-working holiday so why would I like to celebrate it? In my vocabolary the only celebration that are worth celebrating are those that are non-working holidays with the exception of the birthdays of my family members and of course, our anniversary.

I would like to think that valentines day are for lovers but then again I see too much commercialism which leads me again to not participate. Ok, I am so cynical with these things. All I am saying is that it is just a plain thursday afternoon that should be spent with their love ones and should always be the case everyday. There shouldn't be one special day where you could splurge like the rest of the world. It seems not original at all when you and your lover are spending time or having a "special date" like the rest of the world does. If you really do love each other then you will skip the dramatics. You could actually have a date of your own whenever you like to celebrate your love for each other and I think that would make it special because you celebrate your love per se and not because it is dictated by a date in the calendar.

Though, I think valentines also reminds us to spend time with loved ones. For me, valentines actually meant going home early, giving my 80 year old grandmother a rose that thinks that it is just a waste of good money, giving yummy goodies so that my 80 year old grandfather could devour it and having a wonderful dinner with them at the confines of our home (which we always do everyday). Basically, I think that its just a normally super traffic day that should be avoided at all cost. Well, I can't help it! I just think that it is just one unnecessary event that I would rather slept on to without any fuzz.
